In 1996, Betsy and our three kids drove off in a motor home and began filing the trip in real time at blondins.com: nine months, 25,000 miles, 40 states. Later came seven years without a fixed address across three continents, then the coast of Portugal. I work in political essays, travel memoir, and photography. In all three, I'm after the same thing: the gap between the official story and what's actually there.
